The Film 'Together' Is Now Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Relationship.

We present a test for long-term couples who appreciate scary movies: Sit down with your significant other and stream Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie has now made its online premiere via Hulu. At first glance, it could look like conventional physical horror, but inside Together lies a profound contemplation about the ways we decide to love each other.

A Debut Feature Investigating Partnership Complexities

Together represents the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, an unmarried couple that have remained a couple for a decade. Having wed in real life in 2017, the actors infuse a unique chemistry to their characters, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.

The narrative commences when the couple move from the big city to the country for professional reasons. A familiar plot device, admittedly, but that’s mostly where the tropes cease. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While walking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists tumble into an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence begins influencing the pair. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes far beyond typical partnership.

The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying fright fest, blending elements of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) body horror, and genuinely funny dialogue (sometimes during something disturbing). The director skillfully blends these components expertly and wraps them up in a consistently growing sense of impending doom.

Layered Performances

A great deal of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a emotional and physical gap. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his hesitance to focus on anything other than his struggling artistic pursuits inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and removed from his social circle. He fears the notion of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he can’t drive and needs Millie for mobility.

The film's most intelligent aspect in Together refrains from painting Tim or Millie the obvious villain.

Tim and Millie confront the kind of problems that come with long-term unions a decade in. Fundamentally, they still love each other. They share moments of joy, comfort one another, and open up at times. But beneath it all, there’s an persistent current of uncertainty about their future together.

Thematic Depth

While the otherworldly presence in Together symbolize these anxieties of codependency and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the metaphor does not come across as hamfisted or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the supernatural and the personal work together symbiotically.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the movie's final takeaway about codependent relationships. Accounts suggest that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a strong argument for avoiding commitment. Conversely, certain partners experiencing tension found that the film ended up guiding them to make up.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own response could potentially serve as a great barometer of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion plant anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply look at your other half and utter, “I understand that choice”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an test you can undertake today.

Together is available to watch on Hulu's platform now.
