Whenever a prominent awards ceremony approaches, one notices a demand to include fresh award types to honor unsung work and fill the spirits of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.
My colleague made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. So would strategy board titles, representing someone's personal cause. However, I must insist for pushing forward since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification backing this proposal remains most pressing above others. This is the request: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.
Categorizing Game Types
Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and inevitably generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason cinema institutions don’t do it. However, it represents an essential concession in the world of video games, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.
To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.
Existing Game Classification System
The major gaming awards currently feature genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these classifications effectively encompass numerous genres, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.
This doesn't apply to puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, all very different: structural challenges in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. What category would fit them among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Acknowledgment Issues
Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games released every year without proper recognition in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.
- One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated in any category during that awards season
- A different innovative game received no nominations in 2019
- Well-received sorting experience got ignored in 2021
- Only a few brain-teasers scraped into niche award types
Value of Brain-Teasers
Frequently they represent small games, but the art of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most popular titles worldwide and have been for over a decade.
The iconic tile-matching title competes with well-known building titles competing to become highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.
Proposal and Rationale
Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. It would be easy to populate a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.
And to reiterate, these include experiences without proper classification at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators operate at the hard edge interactive creation, producing among essential manifestations of the video game form. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
