Dr Crystal Wyllie of an online medical service linked the surge in demand to current cost increases for authorized weight-loss drugs such as Mounjaro. “With costs increasing, patients are using social media. But counterfeit treatments are highly risky. You cannot know what’s inside or whether the conditions they were made in was sterile,” she explained.
Her team has already encountered individuals harmed by personal administration from unverified suppliers. “We understand the disappointment, but buying from messaging apps or WhatsApp is gambling with your well-being,” said the doctor. “These substances could be impure or incorrectly dosed.”

A representative from the pharmaceutical company said retatrutide was in third stage research studies and had not been evaluated or authorized by any government authority globally. “Consequently at this time no one can sell [it] for personal consumption,” they said, adding that any item “falsely representing itself as a Lilly investigational product not yet authorized … may expose users to potentially serious health risks”.
