In a notable development ahead of next year's national polls, a pair of high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the aftermath of widespread and fatal youth-led protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the incumbent government.
A Commitment to Tackle Youth Demands
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which led to considerable loss of life.
"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.
The September uprising was triggered by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from a long period of slow growth and persistent accusations of systemic political corruption.
Details of the New Electoral Agreement
According to the formal pact, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political class. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in setting up the interim government that took over after the previous administration was removed.
Broader Government Discussions Taking Place
In a related event, the sitting interim prime minister recently held consultations with several leading political leaders. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the period of the protests.
After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that conducting a credible election is a shared duty. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and fear-free environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
