European Union Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US on five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on figures who have been central to campaigns to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the move.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become a facet of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and European institutions.
