The US Justice Department has officially joined a legal challenge initiated by California Republicans, aiming to block the California's newly approved electoral boundaries.
This legal action, filed in a US district court, targets the map championed by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was developed in reaction against a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"California's electoral map represents a brazen power grab that violates voting rights and mocks the democratic process," stated the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have expressed confidence that the redistricting plan will survive legal scrutiny.
"The plaintiffs were defeated in the election and they are likely to also lose in court," stated a representative for the governor.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit asserts that California's map wrongfully utilized racial considerations to heavily favor Latino communities in contravention of the US Constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a substitute to advance political interests, but that is precisely what the state legislature did with Proposition 50," stated a senior official from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
This courtroom confrontation represents the most significant counterpunch by the Democratic party in the continuing political battle that started with Texas and has spread across various parts of the country.
In contrast to elsewhere, where GOP-controlled legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan needed public consent, which it obtained with nearly 65% of the vote.
National Implications
Democrats need to gain just a handful of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's midterm election.
The party that holds the majority will influence the remaining period of the current administration, deciding if a unified Republican Congress will persist in implementing its agenda or encounter opposition, investigations and potential further challenges.
