The pace bowler has taken 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an average of 22.10.

Australia's selection chief Bailey has declared that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's England-Australia contest.

Speculation had been growing that Cummins might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that was still troubling him.

Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no definitive call had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in Perth.

The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and remained hopeful about his chances of participating.

"It's clear that time is getting short and there are permutations at play, not only the back issue, but further aspects," the selector added.

"It's positive. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a significant role. Hopefully starting in Perth. If not, we'll adjust."

Injury History

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.

Previous incidents include of back injuries, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from several home seasons in a limited period.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the series.

The selector indicated that it was unclear if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his recovery but acknowledged it was "getting tight" for him to be fit for the first Test.

Contingency Plans

In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.

Versatile player Green was excluded lately from the national team for their ODI contests against India as a safety move because of soreness in his side.

The selector characterized it as a "small issue and stated that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to be ready to bowl."

"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," Bailey explained.

"He was only going to play the starting games anyway. How he handles the bat in limited-overs, even if it just sets him back for a short period, we just made the decision to adopt a safer strategy."
